The body needs its rest. You feel healthier, look younger and are more vibrant when you get a deep nights rest. Your body heals and recovers when you sleep deeply and soundly. Your body usually does not let you down and fortunately your body has a very good alarm clock that works just fine most of the time, it tells you when you are tired and should go to bed and it tells you when to wake up to get your day going. But what happens? What causes your body to fail you, let you down? Why is it so difficult to fall asleep or stay asleep sometimes? It's very frustrating indeed not to sleep and you feel like crap (that means lousy) the next day when you are short on sleep and you feel cranky and emotional. Most of the time you can trace back the reason(s) why you do not sleep like a baby, why you toss and turn and why you feel miserable the next day. It's usually NOT a secret, it often has to do with what you put in yo ur body either food or drink wise as well as something (stress) might weigh heavy on your mind or a combination of both. What are some forbidden foods or drinks you might want to stay away from as bedtime approaches? Caffeine: Caffeinated drinks of all kind: coffee, tea, many soft drinks and chocalate. Why? This stuff revs you up and it turns on a light switch in the nervous system and it says all systems go! Of course everybody is affected differently by caffeine but a good rule of thumb is to knock off the caffeinated drinks eight hours before bedtime. The more sensitive your system is the less caffeine you should consume. The function of caffeine is too keep you up, get you going so it would only make sense to avoid this get up and go ingredient. This used to be tough for me to avoid because I LOVE my chocalate ice cream before bed or my espresso after a great dinner with my family or friends. Your body will thank you and you will for sure feel better the next day. Agree? Even if this is a tough one try it out for size, it might just fit you perfectly. Alcohol: Ahhh, let me wind down, have a drink and go to sleep. Sounds good but alcohol induced sleeplessness happens to the best of us. You might fall asleep for 3-4 hours but the alcohol also has a tendency to WAKE you up. I'm not saying to get off all alcohol but I am saying stop for a week or two and see if your sleeping problems disappear. Alcohol has a way of keeping you up and a good test is to just knock it off for a little bit, you might be pleasantly surprised by the results. Eating large meals to close to bedtime? Just ate a huge meal? Feeling bloated? Eating a large meal may make you feel tired but guess what? The body and digestive system must work harder to break down that food so all of the churning and burning going on inside the body is for sure keeping you up or at least making it more difficult to get a good night sleep. I would try and stop eating 2-3 hours before you hit the hay. (go to bed that is) Oh and by the way, you should not eat more then 600-700 calores before bedtime. It's just too much energy going into the body so it will be tougher to go to bed. Make sense? Ok, give it a whirl! Eat less at dinner time so you can sleep more at night-time. Also when you eat less at night your waistline, your dress size or your favorite jeans might just fit again. Isn't your high school reunion right around the corner? You can do it, I have faith in you. Liquids before bed, whats a good rule of thumb to follow? I would try and stop drinking liquids of any kind 100 minutes (give or take a few) before you go to bed. If you need to take medication or some other supplement take a sip unless you need to take a glass of water to get it down. (follow doctors orders on the medication part) but try and stop drinking fluids 100 minutes before sleeping. Also drinking too many liquids sets off another type of alarm that makes you tinkle (go to the bathroom that is) You have all day to hydrate yourself, night-time is for sleeping so drink less and sleep more about an hour an a half before you retire. Your bladder will thank you and your over-all well being the next day will be pleasant. Rested people are usually less cranky and a little happier in life. (that is what research says) Junk food junkies, are you one of these? If you must snack before bed you must be careful of what you eat. Avoid things like doughnuts, potato chips and other overy greasy or heavily sugared foods. Why? They tend to cause gas and bloating and guess what happens? You can't fall asleep and you for sure are not very comfortable. You need to gently, smoothly and calmly ease your body into bed and that means being smart about what you put into the body a few hours or more before bed-time. Stressed out? Overwhelmed? Join the club! Welcome to planet earth. Stress, we all have it in varying degrees. Some days are more some days are manageable but you must agree that stress has a tendency to shake you up, rattle your nerves and keep you on edge. It's no wonder 70 million Americans have sleeping disorders of some sort or another. Before you go to bed reflect on the day and you need to ask yourself this question, "does the thing or person that is bothering me, does it really matter, should I really hold onto the anger, upset, fear or hate?" Is it worth it? Most of the time the answer is NO but when you hang on and do not resolve the problem at hand you get stuck and your attention gets fixed on the matter and it KEEPS YOU up. Am I right or wrong? Only you have the answer for that but if I were a guessing man I would guess YES! Take a deep breath, look at the important things in life and be grateful of what you have, be grateful of the gifts you have right in front of your face. Don't let an argument or a problem carry over into your bedtime. It is probably easier said then done but don't sweat it, shift you way of thinking, think positive because after all we are what we think.
